Dear Friend,

Let's face it, standing up in front of an audience is tough!

In fact, public speaking is the number one fear most people have.

Of course you want to feel confident giving speeches.  You want the crushing fear of embarrassment to stop more than anything in the world.

I would imagine you've listened to, or watched, great speakers like Barak Obama, Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan.

You have also seen the influence that local business people, mayors and other community leaders have because they have overcome their fear and can give confident speeches. Perhaps you believe they were just naturally born great communicators.

If you think that - you're wrong!

The Truth is that Confident, Inspired Public Speaking Can be Learned

Imagine yourself standing before an audience of 20, 100, 500 or even 5,000 people.  You feel confident and relaxed as you wait off stage.

You can hear the murmur of the audience and the scraping of chairs as you are introduced.

You realize that your reputation has preceded you when you hear the glowing introduction by your host.

You walk to the podium as the audience applauds their welcome. They are excited by the chance to hear you speak.

As you talk you can see nodding heads and eager smiles. They laugh at your jokes and gasp at your stories.

You finish and the audience starts applauding. You see people rising in their seats - it's a standing ovation. The wave of applause washes over you.

Sounds too good to be true?

Well it isn't when you figure the simple methods that the best speakers have discovered (but most people never hear about).

Think about it. Every one of the most influential public speakers all got their start floundering and shaking like a leaf before their presentations.

I can guarantee that if you ask your city Mayor or even Barak Obama, they will tell you stories about the nerves they felt when they gave their first speeches and the mistakes they made as they became confident and successful public speakers.

Time Out!

My Story

From Tongue Tied and Shaking to Confident and Relaxed

Public speaking of any kind was once my greatest weakness.

I was anxious and shy when giving speeches and presentations.

My strongest memories of giving speeches in those days are:

  • Stuttering and shaking, and often speaking too quietly to be understood;

  • Shutting out the audience because I was too nervous to even think about their existence;

  • Having scraps of notes that I couldn't follow or understand; and

  • Feeling as though I was bluffing my way through the speech and dreading any questions at the end.

I was ambitious so I always put myself in positions were I would have to speak or make a presentation.

I remember being asked to read an inspiring passage from a book at a Board meeting of the National YMCA.  I knew the book well and had practiced reading it.  I also knew the people in the audience.

But when I started speaking I started shaking.  I stuttered the first sentences and was unable to get any emotion or feeling into the words.  I felt myself get smaller in my seat and felt embarrassed for the rest of the meeting.

That was then - this is now:

Recently I gave a speech at a Rotary State Conference.  I remember feeling nervous while I waited, but once I was on stage I felt relaxed and ready to inspire the audience.

I looked out and saw about 200 people looking back at me.  I felt confident and at ease.

I told the audience about my project, and saw the audience get interested.  I could feel their warmth and friendliness and see the smiles and nods as I spoke.

I finished speaking and received a great round of applause.

In the next break I went into the audience and was complimented on my speech and my project.

What had changed?

What Transformed Me from a Nervous Wreck into a Confident, Inspirational Speaker?

I decided to change and set about reading all I could and taking courses at every opportunity.

I quickly found out that the authors and experts only knew parts of the story.  They couldn't tell me all that I needed to know.  In fact, some of them must have found their information in a cereal box.

Eventually, I pieced together all the keys to being a confident, inspiring speaker.

And now I want to share what I discovered so that nobody else needs to experience the nerves and embarrassment that I went through.
